Thamsar Pass is an elite Himalayan crossing connecting the lush Kangra Valley with the mythical and isolated village of Bara Bhangal. Completely unmarred by commercial trekking agencies, this trail traverses glacial lakes, sheer granite gullies, and untamed shepherd routes.
Expedition Highlights
Bir / Barot to Rajgundha & Plachak
Trek through dense deodar forests alongside the Uhl river to the alpine meadow camp at Plachak.
Plachak to Panhartu
Gradual ascent leaving tree line behind. Cross roaring glacial streams to set up base beneath massive rock walls.
Panhartu to Thamsar Base / Marhu
Acclimatization trek over lateral moraines. Camp by the emerald Thamsar Glacial Tarn.
Thamsar Pass Summit (4,750m) & Descent to Bara Bhangal
Alpine push starting at 4:30 AM over packed snow and scree. Stand atop the pass with panoramic views of the Western Himalayas before descending into the legendary sanctuary of Bara Bhangal.
Bara Bhangal Exploration & Rest
Interact with the indigenous Gaddi community, visit 300-year-old wooden temples, and rest muscle groups.
Descent along Ravi Gorge to Nayagraan & Departure
Follow the dramatic cliff trails along the Ravi River gorge toward roadhead for evening transit.
